6-1 6-4

Kiefer
Kiefer

great point

大張小費

Q: There was a bad call at 3:2 in the second set, but you reacted well and that was the end of the story?
FEDERER: To me it looked like a bad call. I don’t know how it looked on TV. Look, it happens, but it’s hard when it happens at 0:30 and it was to go either 15:30 or potentially losing the point. It was a little tricky. At that particular moment also the sun came out. Through the roof there was a big glance and it was hard to see the ball. I thought that I was probably going to be broken and then move on from there. But I came back, played a couple of good points. Like against Marcos all of a sudden, when you can win one or two points the serve sometimes helps you out. But all in all I played a great match. Especially the first set was fantastic.

Q: Give us a general view of it.
FEDERER: Good. I started off well from the start. Important is always to take advantage of the second serves you get on grass. That’s what I was able to do. When Kiwi had to go through second serves, this is when I had the most chances because on his first serve, there is not really much I could do. That’s why also I made sure I had a high first serve percentage. I didn’t think I served that particularly great, it was pretty patchy, but still solid enough today.

Q: There were moments of just fantastic tennis?
FEDERER: Yes, I was hitting a good ball from the baseline. The rhythm has come along nicely for me, I’m changing it up, slicing, coming in, staying back. I’m moving also well. I could have hoped to return maybe a little bit better off his first serve. But he usually goes for the outside ace. So, it’s always hard when he makes it.

Q: Do you look forward now to a really big challenge, finally against a Top Tenner, simply to show how much progress you’ve made this week.
FEDERER: Whoever is going to be in the finals deserves it because he is better than the other. If Kohlschreiber wins, he’s not a top ten player, but he’s beaten good players on the way, Tommy, then James let’s say. So, nobody is to be underestimated. And James obviously has got the potential and the game to be dangerous on any given day. I’m happy to be back in another final. I’ve played quite a few finals lately. And it’s nice to be playing well right away on grass especially.

Q: Two times was becoming crazy. What’s your opinion on what he did?
FEDERER: The one time he screamed.

Q: Yes, and when he was motioning like that?
FEDERER: I didn’t see that. He went like that with the hand. I just thought, he turned around because the ball was … I was following the ball not looking at him. But I still missed the ball. It was my mistake. The other one I was just surprised what happened, if he did it on purpose. I don’t know what he did. But he excused himself at the net to say he didn’t mean to cause any problems. Look, it’s okay. The one point I won, the other I should have won but lost it. So, that was my mistake. I’m not upset against Nicolas in any way.

Q: But anyway he should be awarded a point the second time.
FEDERER: Really, was it that bad? Then you speak to the Umpire not me. You give me a thousand of those overheads and I’m not going to miss one. But today, I missed one. I guess the Umpire was shocked himself, he was speechless (laughs).

Q: You started quickly in you match as breaking serve right off. If you had the opportunity, would you rather return to begin and then serve if you had the choice, or would you rather serve first and then go at the guys serve?
FEDERER: 99% of the time I pick to serve to get off serving. Honestly, I think only 20 or 30% of the guys pick the serve. Usually everybody picks the return just to get one service game and if they lose it’s not a problem. Then, after that they feel better serving themselves. I rather just put the pressure on the other guy because I’m confident enough that I’m going to hold my first game. So, that’s my plan behind the whole thing.

Q: You mentioned shadow. How different does it feel with the roof closed as compared to open?
FEDERER: With the roof closed usually it’s cloudy because it’s raining. Then obviously you have less shadows. And also through the roof you don’t get those incredible sun and shadow patches through the court which is more nice to play. I haven’t had a real match this week where I thought the sun was out that much at a particular time so that the whole court was half and half. But it tends to be tricky. But more difficult is obviously when the sun is really low and shines across the court. Maybe like at times at the US Open or at other tournaments like Monaco maybe. But here because of the stadium being pretty closed up, the sun is pretty high up still. So, it’s not really a bad shadow. It looks worse on TV than it actually is to play.

Q: Do you ever think of Wimbledon when you are playing here or do you take this 100% of a tournament in its own right?
FEDERER: Look, once you touch a particular surface you think of the biggest tournament that is coming up. The same when I touch clay, it doesn’t matter where I am, I probably always think about Paris in some ways. This is the same, in the back of my mind Wimbledon is somewhere. I don’t know if it’s during the match or when walking around. It’s just thinking about grass court tennis. How do I need to play to win first of all here and what can I take away from here for next week at Wimbledon.
