stunning...

Roger Federer - Saturday, 20 June 2009

We want this! And Roger will make it! GO~ GO~ GO~

Q. Can I ask you where you were when you heard the news about Rafa last night, what your immediate reaction was and what your reaction is now?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I was here. I heard he was gonna have a press conference at 7:00 p.m. around 5:00 or so. You know, I didn't know if he was just going to announce that he was going to be playing or not playing. I guess that was the question.

So I guess I was, you know, slightly prepared that he wouldn't play, so then it doesn't come as such a big surprise. So it's obviously very disappointing for the tournament, and also for myself.

Q. Are you emotionally ready for Wimbledon now after the massive win in the French Open less than two weeks ago?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I feel, you know, good. I feel like I'm playing very well at the moment. On the grass, it didn't take me much time to get used to the conditions on grass. I mean, never really does.

But it was good to take a week off, you know, get away from it all and enjoy the time at home and recover. I feel like I'm ready to go here.

Q. Do you feel a weight of expectation that's come back onto you? Did you feel it when Nadal lost at the French, and do you feel it now that he's pulled out here? Do you feel expectations have gone back onto your shoulders, perhaps?
ROGER FEDERER: No, I mean, you can't compare what happened at the French with this. You know, we were in the middle of a tournament during Paris, you know, when he lost. You know, I've never won Paris before, so it's a completely different situation.

I've already beaten, you know, Rafa here twice in finals, so I know I can, you know, beat him here. I just think it's very disappointing that he can't play.

But I don't feel like I have extra pressure now having to win the tournament or trying to. I mean, anyway, there's a lot of weight off my shoulders since Paris.

So I'm anyway entering tournaments, I guess, a little bit more relaxed these days.

Q. The fact that you didn't play a tournaments two years ago between the French and here, does that give you more assurance about how you'll be this year?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, yeah, maybe a touch, you know. But at the same time, I know when to take a break and when not to. You know, when to push for another tournament. This one was just hard.

You know, I was mentally drained because I felt like I had to play like four finals at the end of Paris because of the pressure. You know, there's such a relief and happiness once it was all over that for me it was almost impossible to change it all around again and start, you know, a tournament from scratch again like two days after.

So, I mean, I always know that I'm gonna be in good shape, because in practice you can't simulate matches as well in a way. You know, you can practice even harder, and that's what I'm trying to do this week. I've been practicing really well. The weather has been good as well, and I feel like I'm ready to go.

Now obviously the results will only show. I'm definitely missing those big pressure moments of having to face breakpoints and all these kind of things. But you get similar feelings in practice sometimes. So I feel like I'm playing well enough to do very well here.

Q. Does it surprise you that Bjorn, all five years, he didn't play a tournament between the French Open and Wimbledon?
ROGER FEDERER: Not really, no. It's possible, yeah.

Q. Do you consider Andy Murray to be your principal threat now that Rafa is out?
ROGER FEDERER: No, I mean, I always said Andy I think is a wonderful grass court player, and he showed a little bit last year even though he was not very close with Gasquet in that one match where he fought very brave.

But, no, you know, I think with the success he's had on hard courts, you know, the last let's say especially last year where he's been very, very solid and very, very good. I always knew that Andy was going to be, you know, one of the toughest ones to beat on grass next to Rafa and Djokovic, and I think even like Del Potros, Tsongas, Gonzálezs, and now even Soderling.

There are so many guys around who are dangerous and up and coming still. Maybe it's hard for them to win the tournament, but on any given day they can create a huge upset. Then you have the usual suspects: Roddick I think is going to be so difficult to beat again because he's playing better. And other players, so it's being to be an interesting championship, I think.

Q. In your experience, the huge pressure of being a Briton at Wimbledon, do you think that will help him or cramp his style?
ROGER FEDERER: Time will tell really. I mean, seems like he handled it well last year. Again, he handled it well in Queen's, so seems like it's going to be okay for him.

Q. You and Tiger Woods both have 14 major titles. What are the other similarities that you see between the two of you?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, success, I guess. I mean, I don't know what else to say. I mean, like we've been at the top for a very long time. We've been when you talk about golf, you talk about Tiger; when you talk about tennis, you talk about me.

So it's something we have, you know, something similar there. Our mindset, our approach. You know, we're very driven. We try to not only just play well, but we try to dominate, you know, if we can. There is obviously many similarities in this regard.

Q. To what degree is the majors record on your mind going into this tournament, and how do you hope it will affect you, if at all?
ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, the focus is on the first round and the first point, you know. But trying to regain my Wimbledon crown, I guess, so that stands over trying to beat, you know, Pete's record right now.

But I guess once I come down to the semifinals or finals, hopefully, you know, in like 10, 12 days, you know, then hopefully that's also gonna start creeping into my mind.

But right now, just trying to regain my Wimbledon crown. It would be a dream come true, of course.

Q. Could I ask you in which way is Rafael Nadal's absence for you disappointing?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I mean, it's a little bit similar to Paris. We played the last four years against each other in Paris. We played the last three years against each other here at Wimbledon. So we definitely won't see the same finals again.

So that's disappointing for me, of course, because I'd love to play him. He's my main rival. We've had some wonderful matches over the years, and especially the one here last year was the one that obviously stands out.

So that we can't potentially maybe repeat that, uhm, is obviously sad. But it gives me it just shows me how lucky I've been, you know, that I haven't been injured over all those years, you know, that I've been able to keep it up.

Even though I was No. 1, the one people were going after, I was there, I was not injured very often, and I was able to keep it up. It just shows it goes so quick.

So it's unfortunate. I'm sad for him, because it must have been a very difficult decision to make.

Q. Did you see him at all during the week here?
ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, on Wednesday maybe, just briefly.

Q. Did you chat at all?
ROGER FEDERER: Chat? 10 second chat maybe (smiling). He congratulated me for Paris. It was good to see him. I asked him how his knee was. He was like, it's okay. So I kind of knew it wasn't great, because he's very honest to me. So I knew that something could be coming up.

Q. Can you compare trying to tie an all time record versus trying to break an all time record? Is there any different pressure?
ROGER FEDERER: I don't know if it's got that much to do with it. Let's say in Paris, it was just trying to win my first Paris, you know. Then obviously if it happens at the same time, you know, now that I was able to tie sort of let's say Agassi's or Laver's, those four different majors, or the 14 of Sampras, it was maybe very fitting that it all happened at once, you know.

But, you know, I didn't particularly enter the French trying to tie Pete's record again. I was just trying to win my first Roland Garros, you know. It's very a different approach. I think when you're down lower, you know, you have eight, nine majors maybe and you're trying to get up there, this is when you're maybe forcing it more. You're trying to say, All right, I need to get a few to pick it up there.

Since I been very close, I knew I had kind of some time on my side. I knew if things fell into place that I was gonna win more majors, you know. So same thing here. I don't feel any pressure having to beat Pete's record right now this week, but I know that things are looking good for me.

If I win Paris, there's obviously a very good chance I can also win Wimbledon without, you know, underestimating any of the opponents, because they're all playing very well, as well. They want to win the tournament here, as well.

Q. One player who pushed you really hard at the French was Juan Martin Del Potro. How do you see his game translating to the grass? Perhaps any danger with his movement or anything like that?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I played him here actually a few years ago on Court 1. I beat him in straight sets. Of course, he's a different player to a few years ago. Even last year I think he lost quite early to my friend Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets maybe, as well.

So I think with confidence, you know, that can help in a big way. He's improved his serve a lot, which is obviously an important key on grass. And that's why I see him also having a run here on this type of surface.

Sure, he doesn't have the experience. That could work both ways. So I think the beginning is important for him, you know, getting through the first week, because this is where the grass is maybe probably the most difficult for him to move on.

Q. You're known as a very sporting role model. In the matches you've lost to Andy Murray, it seems you've
been a little bit irritated, I don't know, by his style, or maybe it was just to lose the matches. Is there anything about his game or his style that irritates you?
ROGER FEDERER: Just that he's very good, otherwise not a whole lot.

Q. Nothing particular about the way he plays?
ROGER FEDERER: No. I mean, he's a very gifted player, you know. He has wonderful feel. He's a great tactician. I always said that, you know. And he's finally proved it because it took him some time, you know. That was the disappointing part, I thought, that it took him longer than I expected, you know. So I was wrong with my prediction, because I expected him to do better a few years ago.

But, you know, everything is coming together for him now and he's been rock solid for, you know, over a year now, almost two years now. So, uhm, he's there where he belongs, absolutely.

Q. Do you think, if you and Andy did reach the final, a big if...
ROGER FEDERER: Big if, yes.

Q. Do you think the head to head advantage he's got over you will be a factor?
ROGER FEDERER: Speculation. I don't really want to answer that. Really there's no point to talk about it. Sorry. Love to talk about it, but not there yet.

Q. What sort of impact do you think, if it's used, the roof will make on Centre Court? How will it change the atmosphere there?
ROGER FEDERER: I think it's actually gonna I'm not gonna say it makes the atmosphere better, but might be more intimate because, you know, the sound will stay within the stadium. You're not looking for rain. Looking forward to experience it.

Q. You'd love to play?
ROGER FEDERER: I'd love to play, yeah, sure, indoors. I've played in Halle, you know, in Germany, indoor grass sort of because they've also got the sliding roof, and it worked very well. They even had to once close it during the finals. We stayed on court, they shut the roof, and we continued on. Then the big rain came.

The atmosphere, you know, remained great. Even got a bit more, you know, intense, the whole thing. I'm sure it's gonna be really, really nice.

I went to see Centre Court the other day. You know, it didn't lose anything of the whole history part. It still remains, you know, the best court in the world. I'm excited to going out there on Monday.

Federer aims to win back his crown by being more of a man

“I feel like I’ve definitely become more a man now than in the last few years since I’m not scared of five setters anymore. I can handle the pressure,”

“I had to show my fighting spirit more than ever and it’s nice to have had a chance to show those qualities because before everybody was just used to my dominance. It’s good to know for myself that I can also do it differently,”

“Now going into the grass season, and Wimbledon, and being on top of the world it’s a fantastic feeling.”

“For me it’s about the majors because right now Wimbledon is around the corner,” said 27-year-old Federer.

“From Paris until Wimbledon, this is when you want to play your best tennis. So the ranking will always follow when you do play well.

“I know it will take a special effort to get back to number one because Rafa has set the bar high. It’s going to be hard to take it away from him because he has so many great tournament victories in his 365-day rankings. But I feel I’m a step closer now by winning in Paris and winning my 14th.”

“I do think I’m the favourite actually, with the success I’ve had. I came close again last year,”

“Once you arrive in London, you start getting into the frame of mind and it’s like ‘let’s go again’, I know what it takes. It only takes a couple of hours to feel at home.

“With no disrespect to the other players … I feel like I’ve got the game, I’ve got the mental approach and I’ve got the experience to win at Wimbledon many more times.”

Roger...

Roger

The interview was done 5 days after his win at Roland Garros at his Parents home.

Roger has 14 Grand-Slam-titles and is one of only six players in tennis history that were able to win each major tournament. He is considered the best of all time, and yet what about the 27-year-old world star outside of tennis? What are his wishes, and anxieties how does he feel about Fatherhood? The BaZ asked Roger 55 questions, five days after its Paris triumph.

BaZ: Roger: How is it going after two weeks of playing in the dust and clay?
I am used to it now. The clay does get in my eyes for sure. The socks become very red. It is better on Grass or Hard court where these things dont occur.

2: What was the first thought that you had at Match point in Paris?
It was something simple. I created this. It was one of the most important victories of my career. It was a weight that was lifted. Certainly the first Wimbledon victory will remain always special, it gave me all that I have. It made me popular, gave me the self-confidence, was the realization of my childhood dream. All my idols did not win in Paris. Therefore Roland Garros is different. But this first win is immense.

3: did you think during a game once of the money?
Once. In Shanghai, in the first masters when I had qualified before the last group game for the semi finals. The win against Johansson was no longer important, but there was 150,000 francs for the victory! I thought almost in every rally: 150,000 francs! 150,000 francs! What can I buy? Everything! It was hell to think that in every shot of the money. That never happened.. fortunately for me.

4: Are you ever ashamed of your tears?
No, not ashamed It was embarrassing perhaps a little. the camera likes to focus closely on the tears. It is good to show emotions. I am actually happy that I do.

5. what would you want to have to be the perfect tennis player - without Roger Federer.
Serve, I take Andy Roddick, in addition David Nalbandians backhand, Rafael Nadals forehand and Lleyton Hewitts fighter qualities. There is no longer so many Volleys today, but I would say Stefan Edberg, Patrick Rafter or Tim Henman. And in the mental area, I take probably once again Nadal. This doesnt guarantee success, But it would be a very difficult to play against this opponent.
6: Who can you not be without as a tennis player
I could make actually all alone. But not so professionally and certainly not so well. Longest person I collaborate with is Pierre Paganini; he was certainly a very important man in my early career.
7: How do you spend a perfect day?
Without tennis: Either with friends, home - or with Mirka at the beach, on the Maledives: Romantic dinner maybe. Maybe to the Spa, massages watch the sunset and enjoy the waves.
8: With whom would - except your woman - you get stuck gladly in the elevator?
Then probably with my mommy.. (yes, it says mommy) lol

*cute!

9: Who are your best friends?
Reto Staubli was my best man. Then there is Yves Allegro, Marco Chiudinelli, also Severin Lüthi.

10: Your favorite food?
I could eat Italian every day. I also like Japanese. And somehow my number 1 is always the Swiss food: Rösti, raclette, fondue - if I am at home.

Rösti

11: What do you not like?
I was a vegetarian until I was 16. Then I went into the steak House during the 1998 Davis Cup with Marc Rosset. When I said that I eat no meat, he was surprised! He ordered me a small piece of every kind of meat out of the kitchen. I tried, some fit me - and so began that.

With Mirka on vacation in Thailand I discovered the seafood, and the fish - and today I eat actually everything. As a vegetarian, I experienced hard times at junior tournaments.

12: What do you do when you first wake up?
I snuggle with Mirka. That comes before I get out of bed. Then I go shower, brush my teeth and shave.

13: Your biggest flaw?

15. Are there still people who are rude/impolite to(wards) Roger Federer? When was the last time someone yelled at you?
When I was playing Exhibition-natches with Sampras in Asia, we were invited at the Prime-minister's of Malaysia. The man who arranged this spoke for half an hour - after two hours it was time for us to go. The dinner was still being served, and I called the person in charge, in order to complain for the fact that he had made us deal with this unpleasant situation. At that point I was very angry. He didn't like it and he yelled back at me. This wasn't good.

16. Which is the dumbest advice you have received during your career?
There have been whole match-analysis-attempts, eg vs Nadal, in which every single stroke was listed. Then there are people who make phone-calls all the time, who write to me, asking why I don't write back, saying I am impolite. But I am not sore at anyone, it's ok by me.

Yes, that happens. People who are not at all interested in sports, and who don't know that Switzerland exists. I don't expect everyone to know who I am. That's not what I think of life. Otherwise, it wouldn't be good.

19. When was the last time someone called you "Roschée" instead of "Rodscher" ?
In Paris this happenned 100 000-times in the past. But now it happens rarely, I have instructed the people well in the previous years, to make sure they will call me "Rodscher", because I was baptised that way and I live up to my south-african origin from my mother's side with pride. But I think It's funny when Romands and French write "Rodgeur" in order to read it in the right way. So far I haven't wanted this to change (?).

20. Who does someone admired admire?
Other sportsmen. Golfer Tiger Woods, he is an inspiration to me. Previously also basketball player Michael Jordan. And motorcycle driver Valentino Rossi, who I watch when I can. But also musicians, like former Bush (rock band) singer, who is a friend - and I have attended two concerts of his.

21. What will you be doing in 20 years?
I will be looking after my family of course. But I also see myself still working, not just sitting around, although I don't think it will have to do with tennis. Today I can't imagine myself as a coach, or as a TV-expert. I rather see myself associated with some sponsors or running my own business, if it still exists. Basically I believe that I will live in Switzerland and enjoy life.

22. You will be a father after Wimbledon. Have you and your wife attended a childbirthpreparation class?
No, we haven't. But friends have given us a tone of books on this subject, and I have read a little. But the most important thing for me is to exchange thoughts with other people who have already had this experience. And the doctor also gives you much information.

26. Is the fact that you'll become a father only associated with anticipation or with worries as well?
One has a lot of worries as well. It begins in the first few months, during which one must wait until one announces it (the pregnancy), and until the doctors say what could go wrong. But I am happy for the responsibility that comes with it. And tennis helps me. I have come through so many difficult situations, that I just have the feeling that we will be good parents.

Roger Federer: Interview without taboos
from blick.ch

What it is to live as an immortal? How does the world look like from cloud 7? We wanted to know and asked Roger Federer for an audience.

Q: So Mr Federer, what it is to live as an immortal?

RF: I feel very very well at the moment. The win in Paris is just unbelievable. And it feels great to see the press covered with positive headlines. It is not really necessary but I enjoy reading it mostly because there were also times when there were other things written about me even though they weren't always bad. Now the press conferences are just a little bit more pleasant. I don't need to explain all the time why I lost this or that match.

Q: After Paris you withdrew from this week's tournament at Halle because of "emotional exhaustion". Do wins exhaust more than losses?
RF: Basically you can play for another week. And another one. And another one. Until you don't get injured. When you are young you don't think much about that. You just travel from one place to another and play straight on. You never get injured unless you do it by accident.

Q: Are you old now?(你現在老了嗎?)
RF: I am older and that's why I think twice if it makes sense to play even more so if you have had a problem with your back, like in my case, or with your foot or shoulder. All of a sudden you are more cautious. Besides there is also mental strain. I had to keep my focus all the time in the last 3 weeks. Therefore an easy week like the one that I had now in Switzerland did me quite good. I can't afford this often but when I need it I must have it. I enjoy extremely my time in Switzerland.

Q: Has it happened to you to wake up and not to know where you are?
RF: When I woke up in hotel rooms as a junior who was new to the Tour. It was dark. For a short moment I didn't know where I was. In the last couple of years this has happened to me actually very seldom. I used to play 5 weeks back to back. I don't do this anymore nowadays.

Q:When you are in Switzerland do you have time and do you feel like undertaking something or you just lay around?
RF: I don't have almost any press appointments while I am here. Appointments with sponsors are very rare as well. I am here to meet friends, my family. I want to have time for the people whom I don't see often. I enjoy having a day without any schedule.

Federer: "I had to give just 5 autographs in Coop"

Q:Roger Federer, do you sometimes do things that we mortals do?
RF: For example? (laughs)

Q:For example to buy milk.
RF: Yes. On Tuesday when I came back from Paris I was in Coop (this is a Swiss supermarket chain)
當我星期二從巴黎回來我在Coop(瑞士的連鎖超市)。)

Q:Then do you know how much a liter of milk costs?
RF: I didn't know the exact price but I know the total bill. I should say that I still enjoy shopping. This is possible in Switzerland without any problems. This week while I was at Coop I had to give just 5 autographs and to pause for one photo.

Q:And this after you became immortal by winning your 14th GS title in Paris?
RF: I appreciate Swiss people's discretion. I give enough autographs, I don't run from this, no fear.

Q:It has been different before. For a long time you used to hide behind glasses and wear your baseball cap so that your face can't be seen.
RF: I don't do this anymore. I had this phase once a couple of years ago. I thought that I had to hide myself. I thought: just no eye contact.

Q:You were afraid of seductive looks?
RF: No, no, back then I just didn't want to be approached all the time. But it's not that bad at all because people have always been very polite to me. They are happy. I also go out not only to buy milk. When I feel like doing it I go to the lake or meet colleagues. Just so spontaneously without any plan.

Q:So it is possible to live normally being a god?
RF: Yes, yes, it's OK. It's not that different than you the normal ones.

Q:You laugh because you think that we don't have this small advantage compared to the immortal ones?
RF: In fact you don't have any big advantage. I can also live normally in this world.

Continue...

Q: Roger Federer, how much does your body cost?
RF: No idea. I haven't insured it.

Q:Every model insures her body, even single parts: nose, chest...
RF: Yes, I know. But I promised myself once that I'd never say: I have a shoulder problem and I can't play tennis anymore. Give me 2 millions or I'll quit playing tennis.
I just play till the end, till the body doesn't want anymore.

Q:Is it just doing your job when you play a GS like you did in Paris or there is still some fun?
RF: I don't look at it as a profession because I turned a hobby into a dream job. Of course you can regard it as a job because I earn money with it. But I don't look at it this way while I am on the court. This is a hard physical work, yes, and also mental strain. But it's always nice to play again on Centre Court. The fans everywhere are unbelievable.

Q:Do you still notice the enthusiasm on the stands?
RF: Absolutely. Much more intensively than at the beginning of my career.

Q:There aren't any record left to break. How do you motivate yourself after Paris?
After the US Open there is a break. Then I must see how it will go on. When our baby gets born I'll know better what more I want to achieve. At the moment I think that I want to play for a long time. Being a champion you want always to win. There are enough goals that you can chase.

Q:You'll be a father. Let's say that it will be a boy. It is sure that he won't play tennis, isn't it? Having such father... (sorry, can't translate this expression but the idea is that there won't be much left for the child when it has such father)
RF: (laughs) I did speak about this with Mirka. We decided that if he wants to play tennis, he should try to become as good as his mum first. Step by step. I am very relaxed in this respect. It's important that the parents encourage and that they aren't overambitious. However there isn't any danger from our side.

Q:It's dangerous for the kid. If he plays tennis he'll always be compared to you. Poor guy.
RF: Yes, actually this is mean. It's not fair at all.

Q:The following scenario: it's Saturday evening, a day before the Wimbledon final. Contractions. Your pregnant wife must go to the hospital. Are you going with her?
RF: Yes, of course.

Q:And where will you be on the next day - in the hospital or on Centre Court?
RF: On the tennis court. This means that Mirka should take the decision but I am 100% sure that she would say that I have to go to the tennis court because 15 000 people are waiting for me there. I don't think however that this would happen exactly at Wimbledon.

Q:It would be your son's revenge that he could never become a tennis professional with a god for a father.
RF: Our kid will find his way. The most important thing is that it will be healthy.

Severin Lüthi

Q: Is Roger Federer after his RG triumph the greatest player of all times?
SL: I don't want to belittle Sampras's record but to win on all surfaces is incredibly difficult. That's why for me Roger's achievement is bigger having in mind also that he is still young and very hungry - he won't rest on his laurels and will accomplish more. Roger loves tennis like maybe nobody else and this is his greatest strength.

Q: Federer was exhausted after the FO. How was he feeling?
(Roger
SL: I was also very tired. The three weeks in Paris were very intensive and the matches were difficult also for me. I also suffer during the matches. But Roger had the biggest stress - he had in addition the physical strain.

Q: Were you afraid at any moment that he could lose?
SL: There were critical situations. There wasn't any space for an error when facing a BP at 3/4 in the 3rd set against Tommy Haas. In such moments you realize that Roger's achievements can't be taken for granted. Even I had the feeling in the last couple of years that everything went on its own. However it isn't so - it should be worked hard for every single win.

Q: What did you think about during the final when that streaker ran on the court?
SL: I'd already seen him when he wend down the stairs. I got very scared when he ran to Roger especially because it took so long for the security to get to him. I would rather jump on the court to help him. Then I just hoped that this crazy man didn't rattle him. Such incident can turn a match around. But Roger showed once again how strong mentally he was. It didn't take him long to find his rhythm again.

Q: How did you experience the final?
SL: I had a good feeling from the beginning till the end. However at the end I saw that Roger felt the pressure and it was difficult for him to close the match.

Q: In the previous rounds Federer had experienced difficulties. What was the reason for your good feeling?
SL: On the one hand I knew that he was ready for this task and that he had a lot of experience from similar situations in the past. On the other hand Robin Söderling found himself in unknown territory which is a disadvantage that shouldn't be underestimated. All of a sudden everybody wants something from you, the locker room is empty. You have a lot of time to think which doesn't make things easier for you.

Q: The pressure was even bigger for Federer.
(Federer
SL: After Nadal's loss the journalists asked him always the same questions. Friends sent him text messages saying: "Now is your moment". This is polite indeed but it also increases the pressure. It's incredible how Roger copes with pressure and other unfavourable factors.

Q: How did you live through the hype in Paris?
SL: The hype was immense. Roger gets recognized everywhere. I think that 98% of the people in Paris wanted him to win. Everybody wished him good luck - the waiters in the restaurants, the drivers of the transport services, other players. Even those that he beat told him at the net that now he had to win the title. I think that after the dramatic AO final the degree of respect and affection to him has increased again.

Q: Why did he have a secret practice session on Saturday?
SL: Secret practice is exaggerated. I just decided that it would be best for him to prepare without any disturbing factors - no fans, no cameras, nothing.

Q: Wasn't this Federer's wish?
SL: No, not at all. He often signs autographs even after his warm-up practice before matches because the fans are so dear to his heart. I think he felt sorry that no fans were allowed during his practice. But otherwise it would be maybe too much. At Roland Garros there are a lot of people in a very small space. For example we wouldn't be able to do without bodyguards. Without them we wouldn't be able to reach the courts in the last week.

Q: Was it necessary to withdraw from Halle?
(Halle
SL: Roger must first assimilate what happened in Paris and he must think in the long term. When you change the surface there is a risk of injuries which shouldn't be underestimated. The risk is even bigger when a player is tired. Besides he has to think also about Mirka. The wife of his sparring partner Jérôme Haehnel told me in Paris that her doctor forbade her to go to her husband's matches during her pregnancy.

Q: What are your expectations about Wimbledon?
SL: I am very confident. Roger had a huge confidence boost in Paris. Besides grass is his favourite surface. Nevertheless it won't be easy to go to this tournament without any match practice.

Q: Federer accomplished everything. Is the pressure now gone?
(Federer
SL: There is always pressure at this level. But Roger has the gift to see everything positively. Roger is the most positive person that I have ever seen on the court.

Roger

Dear fans

I am sorry to announce that I have decided to withdraw from this week's Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany.

I sincerely apologize to the tournament organizers, my competitors, and my fans in Germany. I only hope they will understand that I still feel emotionally overwhelmed and exhausted by the incredible events of the past few days. It is hard for me to admit, but I simply cannot imagine giving my best effort in another tournament right away and I don't want to risk injury if I am not 100% prepared. I need to rest and recuperate.

I look forward to returning to Halle in 2010 to go for my sixth title. It is one of my favorite events on the ATP World Tour.

I also want to thank all of you for your unbelievable support these past two weeks. You are the best, and you helped me make a dream come true.

Roger

尤其是"you helped me make a dream come true."
Roger
