Pre-final Interview

Saturday, 5 July 2008

Q. Do you have that lingering worry that the French Open final's result will repeat itself today?

ROGER FEDERER: No, not really.

Q. If you ask, who do you think will lift the Cup today?

ROGER FEDERER: We play tomorrow.

Q. Yes, tomorrow.

ROGER FEDERER: That will hopefully be me obviously.

Q. How prepared are you for tomorrow?

ROGER FEDERER: I'm well prepared. I've had a good championship so far. No real worries. Feeling healthy. I think that's really the best way I can feel. So I'm very happy from that angle. Always playing Rafa is a test that I was hoping for. I'm really looking forward to that match tomorrow.

Q. Have you had a chance to see Nadal's semifinal, gone through it?

ROGER FEDERER: I saw, what, maybe four games. Didn't see a whole lot.

Q. When you say it's the final you were hoping for, could you just expand on that and explain why particularly?

ROGER FEDERER: Well, I think it's the same for him, you know. Beating me or beating Rafa in a Grand Slam final, I think you can really say the guy deserved to win, you know. The guy is, you know, the sort of best on clay. Now it's the one who is best on grass kind of thing for the season. These kind of things.

Beating your main rival is always obviously a big thrill. I've played Rafa on so many occasions on clay that obviously my head to head is not going to be the best against him, you know.

But it's nice for myself to have created this chance and for him, as well, you know, to get all the way to the Wimbledon finals and play him on a different surface than clay. I hope that this works now in my advantage, you know, like it did for him on clay in Paris.

Q. You said you only watched four games of his semifinal. Why so few? Do you already know much about him?

ROGER FEDERER: You guys, huh? Always in the press. I wish it was different, this life, but sometimes you have to do press, as well. I got back and all I saw was sort of I got to see, what was is, 5 3 in the second. And I didn't watch quite a few games. Just saw the breaker. Then just saw the last few games of the third set, so... But there's DVD always. I'm not going to watch that. I know him plenty.

Q. Do you need to watch more or do you feel you know everything about him?

ROGER FEDERER: No, not a whole lot. I know how he plays. I've seen him throughout The Championships here. Whatever, a few sets here and there, you know, see how he's playing. Maybe I'll watch something more if I think I have to. But at the moment I think I know everything really that I need to.

Q. What will you do the rest of the day?

ROGER FEDERER: Just sort of practice, relax, treatment. Yeah, this is sort of those nice boring days for me, you know, where I just want to get through the day and relax. So start thinking about the finals a little bit tomorrow. Prepare as well as I can, get plenty of sleep so I'm fresh for tomorrow.

Q. One of the things you will have seen if you watch that particular part of the match is that when matches are tight, he slows things down a great deal. It's something he has been criticized for. What is your view of that?

ROGER FEDERER: Uhm, yeah, I mean, I've played him plenty where he took his time. You know, I mean, it's obviously a fine line, you know, because I think until he gets into position to serve, you know, he takes his 20 seconds, whatever, and then he takes another, you know, 10, 15 seconds until he really serves.
It's a tricky situation, you know. But the unfortunate part, let's say, is the umpire will always give him a warning, but he will never give him a point penalty. I'm not saying he abuses it, but he never really feels the heat that much.

Q. Is that irritating for you?

ROGER FEDERER: It used to be irritating let's say in the early days when I played him the fifth or sixth time, when I played him quite a few times in a row, and I really felt he was playing very slow. I think he's speeded it up actually a little bit since those times. I actually felt like he was playing fair, you know, lately. He does still play slow, but not as slow as maybe eight matches ago when I played him. Look, it's up to the umpire. I try to concentrate. I don't think I win or lose a match because he takes five seconds extra per point. That's not going to kill me.

Q. You wouldn't classify it as gamesmanship on his part, would you?

ROGER FEDERER: No, I wouldn't.

Q. He was okay for last year's final?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, that's what I'm saying. You know, I didn't feel like he was taking a super amount of time that it would start to bother me the last few times I played him. It's on the edge I'm aware of that. It's up to the umpire to decide what he wants to do.

Q. Overall do you think he's made you a better player, having him in the same era as you, and vice versa?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, to some degree I guess. He's made me improve, you know, just the approach, you know, playing against him. I was playing him quite differently in the beginning of my career. Well, the thing is also he's evolved as a player, started to play better. He's challenged me, you know, especially on I think clay for me. That was the major, major part of playing on Rafa on clay, it was the ultimate test for me, you know. I mean, I don't know how much he's helped me to play against other players. Playing him, because it's such a different dimension, such a different type of game, it's hard to really judge, you know. But I definitely feel like he's made me more tough, that's for sure.

Q. Two weeks ago did you almost assume that you would be playing Rafa in the final? Because of that, has your mindset always been on Sunday?

ROGER FEDERER: I mean, you sort of hope for being in the finals, first of all, and then whoever it is in the finals, you don't really care in the first place because all you want to be is you want to take part in it. Doesn't matter who it is. But then when you see the draw sort of, you know, being narrowed down, you see that Rafa is the big favorite in the other section, I'm the big favorite in my section, obviously you start thinking more about, you know, the possible final.

But in the beginning I was just really more concentrated on getting through my part of the draw, you know, because it's quite a bit of talk going on. I was defending champion. I don't want to, you know, go down in the first couple of rounds. I was able to avoid that. Then I think I played great throughout The Championships. So it's been a good week for me. And I could also just see all the other players play, which is always nice. And Rafa's been for me also, you know, by far the best guy in the other section of the draw, you know. So he totally deserves to be in the final.

Q. How much do these finals hurt? How deep into yourself do you have to dig mentally and physically?

ROGER FEDERER: Hurt in terms of what?

Q. How much do you have to hurt yourself to really work through these finals?

ROGER FEDERER: There's no pain. There's sort of a pressure that maybe wasn't there quite yet, you know, throughout, whereas maybe in the beginning, on the court, it's kind of hard. But you know you're playing a guy probably who's got a chance, but he's probably not going to upset you, you know, in Hrbaty. But this is different because this is now crunch time, it's playing the second best player in the world, somebody's got all the chances to beat you on any given day, you know. So you definitely respect that.

It's make or break, and that can sort of put you under more pressure or make you more nervous. I've been in this situation so many times that for me it's not really a whole lot different because for me I know I'm playing very well, and from that standpoint I don't have much to worry about. And I know if I do play well, I'm most likely, you know, going to win the finals.

But, again, I cannot control everything that happens, that comes from the other side of the court. I think it's just sort of a huge relief once the finals is over, no matter how it goes, just because the pressure is finally gone.

Q. What do you think about the fact that Rafael and you have played the last six finals in the French Open or here in Wimbledon? That speaks a lot about your competition, the other field of competitors.

ROGER FEDERER: I think it's quite incredible actually, you know, myself that we played each other so many times on big occasions. Okay, you could think that that would happen because we're No. 1 and No. 2 in the world. But I've been No. 1 for 230 weeks, I think he's been No. 2 for over 150 weeks, you know, all in a row. He's never lost his No. 2 position either.

You know, with his results that he hasn't been No. 1, it's also quite unbelievably tough for him, you know, and hard for whoever has been behind Rafa as well, to never become No. 2, as well. I'm very happy with my run in Paris. He's probably very happy with his run here in Wimbledon. We want a piece of each world, you know, but the other person hasn't given in yet. I think it's a great rivalry.

Q. Nothing like this has happened before.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, to some degree I'm sure, but maybe not as extreme in such a short period of time, and especially maybe in a row like that. So I think it's very interesting. It's great.

Q. Do you get a sense of history about this rivalry, that people will look back at it in 20 years' time, Borg/McEnroe?

ROGER FEDERER: Honestly, it's quite hard for me to judge at the moment how this rivalry will be looked upon, you know, later on. Like we look at the Becker/Edberg, the McEnroe/Connors, or Borg/Lendl, you name it, Sampras/Agassi. I don't know how it's going to be looked at in many years' time because in the moment you're sort of right in it. You try to win the matches that come along, you know, against your main rival. You sort of just I don't know, it's hard.

I mean, I know it's something special what we're going through at the moment, but I think maybe in five years' time we'll sort of see more of how it will really have affected, you know, maybe juniors who came up, or the media, how they look at the new rivalries, all these kind of things, what they thought about it. At the moment you're right in the heat of it, so it's one big momentum.
