Q: The guy did not give you any rhythm. So it was not easy to play well?
FEDERER: Yes it was difficult. I sort of expected something like that. When it happens that you cannot play your game and things are not working, you are still surprised because normally you sort of decide how the point is being played. And I could not do that today. At times I wanted to play too safe. It’s hard then to open up and to play really aggressive. He was always keeping me on the back foot a little bit with a lot of flat shots, a lot of slice and drop shots. An awkward sort of game. I think grass is probably his best surface in his playing style. I really started to return a little bit better at the end of the first set. I made every return I needed to and in the beginning I gave him many free points which didn’t help my rhythm. The thing is, I served well. I put him under a lot of pressure from that standpoint which them allowed me to take sometimes a little more chances on the return, which was important today.

Q: Describe with a few words the third to the last point you hit a wicked backhand that bounced pretty short for him and he was just completely fooled by.
FEDERER: That was a slice duel. I had a long long one as well with Michael Youzhny once at the Australian Open which lasted for fifteen shots or more. The first thing you’ve got to do is obviously not to miss. But my slice has improved so much, so I thought I was confident in going into that sort of a rally at 15 all. I hit a little bit short by surprise actually. I didn’t mean to hit it that short. It was pure luck. It was meant to go a little longer. It was a big point if you look back.

Q: Now, the draw is getting tougher. What do you expect for the next round?
FEDERER: Now, I played a leftie, I played a rightie. I know again how it feels. I expect a tough match if it were Baghdatis or Santoro. Both of them have the potential to be really dangerous on any given day. I think Marcos is in some way one of the dark horses in Wimbledon. He is not to be underestimated on grass. He’s been in the finals here, semis in Wimbledon. Fabrice, even I have a good record against him, I still believe, on a grass court, he is a very tricky player. You saw it today, if you play the right way on grass it can be tricky for everybody. And Fabrice is more routined than Vacek today. I expect a difficult match, a dangerous match.

Q: You look very fit and also you have lost some weight since last year. Is that because of your illness or because you purposely tried to do something?
FEDERER: After my sickness actually I thought I gained a little bit of weight. I just thought I was maybe a couple of kilos too much. So, I tried to look at my weight just the last two months or so, and I lost a few kilos, the ones I really wanted to. That’s maybe one of the reasons I feel better again, I’m moving better. Obviously automatically because I’m doing so much sports the last few months, it’s also normal you lose some weight. But, you’re right, I’m in good shape. I feel fine. But compared to two years ago, I’m much heavier than I used to, I’m 88 kg now compared to the 80 kg written in the media guide. But it’s not all on the stomach or on the neck, 8 kg hanging off the neck (laughs). Or a 8 kg nose (laughs).

講到脖子的部份...XD

Q: Roger, a bad night because of the match yesterday?
FEDERER: Yes, disappointing. I was quite sad actually after the match, sort of like a sour taste. It was just terrible. It’s disappointing. I don’t think we deserved to be knocked out after two matches. We were close in both of them. It’s a hard one. But I hope we are still going to be good hosts and hopefully finish up with a good match against Portugal. But it does hurt a little bit. That’s true.

Q: Boris Becker said that he would forbid the shouting in women’s tennis. It is also a king of ritual, a whim. Do you have rituals or whims?
FEDERER: No, more a routine. You always do the same think, because you know it works. But I am so relaxed that if something came up I would not have a problem. I take enough time in order to warm up, prepare. I don’t really have any tics. I don’t groan, but I think it is a little less on the men’s side anyway. But I don’t like it when some groan on one point, then they don’t on the other. From a certain intensity it should stop. I agree.

Q: Does the series of being unbeaten on grass in 57 matches mean anything to you?
FEDERER: Yes, sure. It is a great success. If it should end, then I guess fromm y side. So, it does mean a lot to me. I hope it will go on. If not, I still have my Wimbledon series. But it is a great feeling and gives me even more confidence. Some series are close to your heart and that is one of them.

Q: Is a match like today’s better for your development towards Wimbledon than a match like yesterday?
FEDERER: Both are important. After a good match, you go out, feel great, don’t think too much. After a match like today … it happens often in sports that you don’t play too good, but still win. I don’t always play great at all the 70, 80 or 90 matches I play during the year. When you are in the States and see the result you think it was a confident win. But when you are here, you see how terrible it sometimes is. Matches like this help to gain confidence because usually you play a bit better in the next round and you still won the match. So, it is not as bad as it seems when we are talking about it now.

Q: Is there a danger to feel unimpeachable with such a series?
FEDERER: No, I never underestimate anybody anymore. That was the case in the past. For instance here I once underestimated Michael Chang when I lost to him in the semis. It was my first match on the centre court in that week and I thought, ‘you will not lose to Michael Chang on grass.’ It happened more often in the past. Today, you always prepare properly, concentrate on the match and think about how your opponent might play. There is no room for underestimating anybody because it is one of the worst things one can do in sports.

Q: Are you anxious before a match that the series might end?
FEDERER: If I were afraid, I would not be here. I would end my career on grass and would have the series for ever. Not fear, but I do think about it, but it’s not like I think about it during break point or so. I don’t just want to challenge the series, but to continue the series if possible. Today, I did. So, I am very happy and hope it will continue. If it ends, then it ends and you will try a new one.
